My name is Robert B. Routt.
My life changed dramatically after years of pain and escalating prescription medication use led to dependence and a near-fatal medical crisis. By the time I was found unresponsive at home, paramedics initially could not find a pulse. They kept working until a faint pulse was detected in my right foot, giving me a chance to survive.
I spent approximately three and a half weeks in a coma. When I woke up, surviving was only the beginning. I faced serious physical challenges, rehabilitation, and the difficult process of learning how to live in a body—and a life—that had been permanently changed.
Rather than remain silent about what happened, I chose to tell my story in Almost Gone: A True Story of Survival, Coma, and a Second Chance. The memoir traces my life from my Kentucky childhood and service in the U.S. Navy Seabees through family, business, prescription medication dependence, the medical crisis that nearly ended my life, and the long road back.
Almost Gone is not about placing all responsibility somewhere else. It is a story of survival, accountability, faith, family, recovery, and second chances. I share both the choices I made and the circumstances surrounding them because I believe there is value in telling the complete story.
Today, I speak openly about what I survived and what it took to rebuild my life. My hope is that sharing my experience can encourage individuals and families facing prescription medication dependence, medical trauma, disability, recovery, or seemingly impossible circumstances… to keep fighting and to advocate for their own health and well-being.
I was almost gone. But I was given another chance—and I intend to make it count.
